How To Do Quality Control in Manufacturing of CNC Prototype

CNC Machining Works

Quality is very important in every industry, with no exception for a prototype and custom mechanical parts manufacturer. So as a qualified supplier, how to do quality control in the manufacturing of CNC prototypes?

Clearly understand and achieve Customer's requirements

1.Understand the purpose of the customer’s products

Design Verification:

The design validation prototype is aimed at helping the customers achieve from concept to reality, maximize the visual result. At this stage, how to achieve quality control in the manufacturing of appearance is quite important.

Engineering Verification: During the development phase of the product, the engineering prototype helps the customer test the product to meet the design specification, test the material, mechanical and optical properties. At this stage, the realization of tighter tolerances can help to verify assembly and in-use functionality.

Verification of low volume production:

This stage is used to test the production line, including volume, time, identifying defects, and optimizing. At the same time, it can be used for sales, making an investigation and survey about market feedback, and determining subsequent production quality.

At this stage, the result of quality control in manufacturing to maximize close to the final products, strict control of the quality of appearance, and tolerance accuracy.

2. Understand the customer’s drawings

How to understand customer drawings? It needs us clearly understand each hole and part of drawings and tolerance of the real meaning. Because the CNC machining will usually have some machined limitations, such as the undercuts, radii, and etc. And understanding the drawings can help us know whether these limitations will affect the customer’s design, or may need to use other ways to meet customer design.

For example, for a three-plate welding part, see the pic below. Two of the surfaces used for assembly have very tight verticality tolerance requirements. At this time, the machining work sequence should be adjusted. First, the material size of a specific size should be sawed with a cutter; after that, welding these 3 plates; at last, CNC milling the surface of the plates, make these 2 surfaces reach the verticality tolerance requirements. May you try, if changing the processing sequence, you would get a bad result. That’s why is so important to know the meaning of the drawings.

At WayKen, we have a technical sales team with a solid manufacturing background, who can provide professional services from quote to after-sales, covering design for manufacturability, materials, quality control manufacturing, and so on.

Ensure ISO certified quality control system in manufacturing

Through this quality management system, Wayken achieve scientific management, focus on customer’s customized needs of quality control in manufacturing, which committed to maximizing customer’s expectations for quality and delivery time. So far, WayKen has reached more than 95% finished product pass rate and on-time delivery rate.

Six strict work flows for quality control in the manufacturing

1.Double-check orders and drawings

At the quote stage, the engineer will proceed with the evaluation of machining feasibility, provide machining suggestions (Design For Manufacturing); After placing the order, the production team will review the drawings, the process standards, and the production schedule again. Double review drawings, carefully treat each order, committed to achieving customer requirements of quality control in manufacturing.

2.Incoming material inspection

Check the size, grade, quantity of the material, and confirm if it conforms to the specification.

3.The fist jig test

IPQC measures important dimensions according to the customer’s drawings to see if the dimensions can meet the requirements.

4.Inspect the first piece

The first piece after CNC Machining needs to be fully inspected to see if it meets the specifications. If it’s for batch production, then it’s necessary to spot-check every 5 pieces to ensure the continuity and quality of production.

5.Cause analysis and corrective measures for nonconforming products

When there is a test unqualified to timely pause, analysis every flow, including clamping, tool positioning accuracy, and so on. Find the reason and solve it to meet the quality control in manufacturing of CNC prototypes.

6.Final inspection, testing reports, and certification are required

OQC inspects every dimension of the drawing with Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM), 3D Scanner, Micrometers, Pin Gauge, Surface Roughness Tester, and the other quality inspection Equipment, provide the report to customers.
